The Tourism Alliance has appointed Richard Tobias as its first Deputy Chairman. Tobias has worked in and is well known to the industry and joins the Alliance from the British Incoming Tour Operators Association where he held the post of Chief Executive for 10 years. He takes up his new role on March 1st.
Digby Jones, Chairman of the Alliance said: “I am delighted that Richard has accepted this challenging new role. His deep knowledge and understanding of tourism, in all its facets, combined with his drive and energy, will contribute greatly in helping raise the issues and concerns so vital to the economic prosperity of this sector. He will reinforce the industry’s focus and help ensure that its economic and employment impacts continue to be understood at all levels of government.”
Commenting on his appointment, Richard Tobias said: “My role will be to strengthen the on-going development of the Tourism Alliance as the unified voice of tourism. We know that tourism activity is a barometer of confidence and at the moment the world is not a confident place. In recent years tourism has taken several hard hits and in the short-term will continue to operate in difficult waters.
“However, businesses of all sizes and sectors in the tourism industry need to voice their concerns and I shall work with government to ensure that in this increasingly challenging climate the needs of tourism are fully understood. The imperative for tourism is to speak with a single voice on the key issues that impact on its well-being.”
The Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, responding to the appointment said: “This is excellent news. Tourism needs to have a clear and coherent voice. The Tourism Alliance is a key player within the industry and I am delighted to see it moving from strength to strength. I wish Richard well in his new role.”
