Route Development Funds

Monday 21 February 2005, 12:34 PM

Studies undertaken by the Department for Transport (DfT) show that there is a strong correlation between regional air capacity and economic development. Therefore, to stimulate regional economic activity, while at the same time relieving pressure on airports in the South East, the DfT is embarking on a programme to encourage the development of additional regional aviation routes through the establishment of Route Development Funds (RDFs). These funds will be established and operated by RDAs and operate in a similar manner to RDFs already operating in Scotland and Northern Ireland. This briefing paper provides information on the formation of Route Development Funds so that members can approach their RDA and contribute to the debate on establishing a fund and the route development process itself.
