Tourism Alliance Submission to Select Committee Inquiry on Tourism

The Tourism Alliance has provided evidence to the Culture Media and Sport Select Committee Inquiry on Tourism which concentrates on the need for Government resolve sub-national tourism development, use the Coastal Community Fund to regenerate resorts, reform the Tourism Industry Council to address deregulation and make the tax regime on tourists more competitive.

Tourism Alliance Package Travel Directive Submission

The Tourism Alliance has responded to BIS's call for evidence on the European Commission's proposals to revise the Package Travel Directive. The main focus of the Alliance's response is to change the definition of a "package" so that travel is a mandatory component of any package holiday. Changing this definition in this way would support small domestic tourism businesses and could increase domestic tourism revenue bu £3.7bn per annum.

Tourism Alliance Submission on Visa Charging

The Tourism Alliance has responded to the Home Offices consultation on Visa Pricing, agreeing with proposals that will provide more flexibility in setting fees. However, the Alliance warns that increased flexibility should not be at the expense of increased efficiency or improvements to core services.

Submission on Changes to the VAT Retail Export Schme

The Tourism Alliance supports the Government's proposals to modernise the Retail Export Scheme. Specifically, the Alliance is calling for the need for visitors to present identification while shopping to be removed and for the zero limit on reclaims to be retained.

Letter to the Prime Minister

The Tourism Alliance has written to the Prime Minister on the second anniversary of his landmark speech on tourism to say that the tourism industry has risen to the challenge and now generates £4bn pa of additional revenue for the UK economy. This is sufficient to generate 85,000 new jobs. However,the industry has the ability to provide further growth and employment if the Government address significant barrier to the industry such as visa processing, deregulation, VAT and APD. With the success of the Olympics, this is where Government priorities should be focused so that the legacy is maximised.

Proposals to Improve Visa Processing in China

The UNTO predicts that almost 20% of the growth in international tourism over the next eight years will be from China, where outbound traffic is expected to reach 100m per year by 2020. Yet the UK's share of this market has declined by 60% since 2001 and France now receives eight times more visitors. This paper presents proposals on how the visa system can be modified to address this problem and generate growth from this important market.

Increasing the UK's Aviation Capacity

The Government recently produced a scoping document for developing a new Aviation Strategy. The starting point for this scoping paper was that aviation should be able to grow, but to do so, it must be able to play its part in delivering our environmental goals and protecting the quality of life of local communities. This paper is the Tourism Alliance response to this scoping paper which sets out the need for aviation expansion in order to support tourism growth.
